Project Description

Wah Gwaan Brewing was born out of a love for beer and sharing Jamaican culture. In Jamaican Patois (English dialect spoken in Jamaica), “wah gwaan” is a greeting meaning “what’s up.”  This phrase reflects the microbrewery’s friendly ambience and sense of community. Harsha Maragh is a first-generation American with strong ties to her Jamaican roots. She and her husband, Jesse Brown, have always dreamed of opening a microbrewery and a community space to share Jamaican culture. Located in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District, Wah Gwaan offers tasty Jamaican-inspired beer with fresh Caribbean fruit flavors like soursop and jackfruit.

With this loan, Wah Gwaan was able to transform their brewery into a tropical oasis complete with a handmade wood bar, colorful murals, and a living green wall. This loan also enabled them to hire a head brewer and part-time beer tender.
