Saki Melius: A Colorful Journey of Passion and Resilience

In the vibrant city of Denver, there’s a hidden gem that has been delighting locals with its authentic Japanese cuisine and warm hospitality. Kyu Ramen, owned by the dynamic and passionate Saki Melius, has become a favorite spot for food lovers seeking a taste of Japan’s rich culinary heritage. With her dedication to creating the perfect bowl of ramen and her unwavering commitment to her community, Saki is a true inspiration.

Two decades ago, after being born and raised in Japan, Saki arrived in the States as an au pair, never expecting that her path would lead her to the world of ramen. However, fate had other plans for her.

Saki’s inspiration for opening Kyu Ramen stemmed from her realization that finding an exceptional bowl of ramen with a flavorful broth was a challenge in Denver. While sushi was plentiful, the perfect combination of noodles, broth, and toppings was elusive. Saki’s passion for creating an outstanding broth, the heart and soul of ramen, grew stronger, and she decided to pursue her dream.

Initially, Saki’s involvement with Kyu Ramen was meant to be a temporary venture, helping her former partners establish the business. However, circumstances changed, and she found herself as the sole owner, driven by her belief that a solid broth would keep customers coming back. The desire to provide a comfortable and welcoming space for everyone, both customers and employees, was deeply ingrained in Saki’s vision.

Drawing from her Japanese heritage, Saki infuses her culture into the restaurant’s ambiance and cuisine. She strives to make Kyu Ramen a place where anyone can feel at ease and experience the warmth and comfort that a steaming bowl of noodles brings. The flavors of her homeland, combined with her commitment to inclusivity, create a unique dining experience that is both authentic and inviting.

Saki’s journey as a restaurant owner hasn’t been without its challenges. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was particularly difficult for Kyu Ramen. Saki found herself facing partner changes, relocation, and the uncertainty of the future. The pandemic’s early days were marked by her partners’ sudden departure, leaving her to navigate the storm alone. Undeterred, she bravely kept the restaurant open for takeout, even during the darkest days when Colfax Ave resembled a ghost town.

During this time, Saki’s resilience and compassion shone through. She donated surplus food to hospitals, homeless shelters, and the Denver Children’s Home, striving to support those most in need during a time of crisis. Her selflessness and dedication to her community were truly remarkable.

Recently, Kyu Ramen underwent a relocation to a new spot on E Colfax Ave. This move brought both excitement and challenges. Saki’s determination to contribute to the neighborhood led her to establish connections with fellow business owners and community leaders. With a new five-year lease in hand, she envisions Kyu Ramen as a cornerstone of the neighborhood, a beacon of delicious food and community support.

Saki Melius, the owner of Kyu Ramen, is a force to be reckoned with. Her journey from Japan to the United States, her dedication to perfecting the art of ramen, and her unwavering commitment to her community make her a remarkable figure in the culinary world. With her warm smile and welcoming spirit, Saki continues to create a colorful and flavorful experience for all who step through the doors of Kyu Ramen.
